Just hung up with the mech doing my nephews' Supra engine. He knows why it blew - spun bearings.

Which is a known issue with these engines when you beat on it in 1st gear.

Reckon if either the Trabant or the Wartburg was an incendiary death trap like the Ford Pinto?
