Web Commerce
I guy in the KC area just shut down his web based business operation called "blabbermouth.com" He would obtain the mug shots of recent arrestees, post them on his website, send letters to those released stating his intent to paper the arrestee's neighborhood with fliers about the arrest, except that they could avoid this public service for a nominal fee of $199.99. Nice business model, eh?
Remember an arrest does not equate to a conviction. One of his targeted customers had been arrested for breaking into her own house after being locked out - and the charges were thrown out the same day.
What a scumbag.
Regards,
D-Ray

He's just being a good capitalist, trying to turn a buck and make his fortune.
So what?

Don, you say that this creep shut his business down but isn't what he was doing extortion? It strikes me as such so I have to wonder whether he's been charged with anything. Also, how did he get this information, names, addresses and mug shots? Sounds like he may have an accomplice or two in one or more of the local PDs.

I'm inclined to agree on the extortion issue but it would all depend on how that state has worded the relevant statute. With respect to the names and mugshots: 1)many local jurisdictions post the names of recently arrested suspects; and 2) some local jurisdictions actually release to the public the mug shots as well. Depending on the local practice the scumbag (and, yes, he is one) wouldn't need inside help.

The records were available publicly. I would interpret what he was doing as extortion, and the prosecutor is investigating.
Ironically, the guy has his own DUI that another website posted in retaliation. He was at least savvy enough to not complain about that, but he did ask the website to take down the arrest information of other family members. Imagine that. Others in his family have legal problems. The nut doesn't fall too far from the tree.
You think, if the prosecutor does go for an indictment, there might be people papering his neighborhood with fliers?

D-Ray

Modern day Scarlet letter. I do hope the DA brings charges.

So, because these records were available publicly, he could have simply done the posting he threatened to do as long as he didn't couple it with a demand for payment not to post?

Well, from what I've been hearing about the sexual attitudes of youth today, the shame would be from being assigned the Scarlet letter V.
