This is probably tied into the OnStar system that is built into a lot of vehicles. My 2002 Silverado and 2004 Acura RL had this feature as standard equipment and it connects through the cell phone network.

Indeed, drive by wire systems where there is no direct link between steering wheel and wheel, or brakes and the braking system have become common in a lot of new vehicles. computers control all the systems. Hack one of these systems and you can make the car do anything you want.

Makes me not want to buy a new car.
