The 85s acting up a little, on cold start it starts to warm up, the gauge goes to its' normal position, heater blows heat, THEN, heater blows cold and the gauge goes pretty far past normal. Does that just long enough to make me worried and then heat comes back on and it settles down to normal. It only does it once per cold start.
Coolant is full. I had the water pump off earlier this year and the vanes were perfect. The thermostat was changed 2 years ago with Stant premium, and the heat comes on first anyway.
The radiator looks like it's been changed recently, nice and clean on the inside. The only foul spot is the heater core, which has had a slight seep since I bought it, not enough to see but I smell it occasionally. Perhaps it's clogging? But the problem is so regular.
Any ideas?
Pete

It seems that the coolant stops circulating. That would explain both the heater not putting out heat and the operating temperature spiking. I suppose the thermostat could be sticking shut and then opening up again.
Or maybe a bad heater control valve. Does the operating temperature spike if the heater is turned off?

No, it's steady as she goes with the heat off.
I thought it might be the thermostat, so I checked flow (took off the cap and watched/felt coolant flow), the heat comes on first, then it does its' little 'I'm going to overheat' dance. So it is opening, the thermostat has to be working, right?
I'll probably go ahead and change it, it's cheap and easy (not as easy as a SBC though). Thinking on this, the car does have a new 'heater lockout valve' - I'll jump that and see if perhaps it's malfunctioning. I'm hoping to put off the darn heater core till spring, like the last 3 years (it's a pretty hard job. I hate dashboard work).

John I think you got me going down the right path. I'm pulling the heater lockout this weekend, its' not important anyway, see what happens.

Snow. Slippery. Cold. Sometimes heavy. I'm not shoveling anymore, I've decided to go a different path:
