Thank goodness that my wife has become a fan of the blues over the years that we have been married. We were scanning through Netflix last night, and she noticed Life of Riley, a documentary on the life of BB King. It was nominally narrated by Morgan Freeman and included interviews from dozens of musicians who trace at least some of their licks to the King of the Blues.

Regards,

D-Ray

No, but a nice play on words considering the struggles that young Riley faced, being born to a sharecropper on a plantation in Mississippi, orphaned at an early age, and living in the depths of segregation. He talked about the impact of having seen a black man hanging from a tree after having been lynched. He went on to play as many as 365 shows a year, both before and after he earned his chops.

Even his greatest success carried with it some irony. His had a smash hit with The Thrill is Gone after his young white producer added strings to blues music. He became famous world wide by touring with musicians who tried to imitate his work - The Stones and U2. Bono acknowledged BB's towering presence as a musician and performer, but also recognized that it was the drawing power of the Stones and U2 that introduced his work to a broader audience. Kind of like Pat Boone having a hit with Tutti Frutti.

Regards,

D-Ray

I'll have to remember the Riley B. B. King movie. A bit confusing for those remembering 1950s TV days.

My wife and I are going to see The Minions.

That's right - you can all stop snickering - I could use a little harmless fun.

You know you want to see it - furrowed brows and contemplation of Crime and Punishment all day not good for us - everyone needs a break.

I tried to read Crime and Punishment in college.

I wanted to be an intellectual snob.

I think I got to page four.

But I'm still not interested in watching a whole movie that is in cartoons.

Although I will indulge in an occasional vintage Road Runner on youtube.

Read Crime and Punishment - intellectual snobbery is for those who like to quote paragraphs at parties.

It is a great work and you will like it.

Also - the Roadrunner, Yosemite Sam, and Foghorn Leghorn are national treasures.
