What is the normally decent thing to do, if a person lets you know they don't like some particular label for themselves?

1. Don't refer to them with it.
2 Based on your belief they are wrong not to like it, use it. If they don't like it, it's their problem.

Apparently, if someone tells you they don't like being referred to with a particular label, this means they are the racist, because they are assuming you wish to call them that because you are white.
