Say a prayer for Nepal

Terrible loss of life in Nepal from a massive 7.8 earthquake.

My sister and her husband have a trip planned in June where they'll fly from Portland to Beijing and take the train to Lhasa, Tibet. Part of the trip includes a trek up to the Everest Base Camp. I'm guessing the side trip to the Everest Base Camp may not be in the cards any more.

I expect there will be a lot of prayer flags at Everest, upwards of 18 climbers and Sherpas were killed in avalanches started by the quake.

I would be waiting a couple years before I climbed Mt Everest. That is if I were inclined to in the first place.

I hope the good people of Nepal do not suffer without food and water as the victims of Katrina did.

My sister and brother-in-law aren't climbing Everest. A trek to the Everest base camp is part of a package deal they got. Interestingly, they could not tell the Chinese government of their intent to go to Tibet or they wouldn't get a visa for China. OTOH, the tour agencies are licensed operators in China who openly advertise package deals with a train ride from Beijing to Llasa, Tibet, along with other Himalayan sights and visits to other Chinese cities.

Glad to hear they aren't climbing it. That train ride sounds very cool.

This is so overwhelming sad. Destructive earthquakes are always a reason for grief, but I have a special spiritual and therefore also emotional relationship to Northern India, the himalayan countries, so this one is different to me.

Just been informed that a Brooklynite whom I know and was reported missing in Nepal is OK. Nice!

I really feel happy for him, his wife and four kids.

World famous mountain climber Reinhold Messner critizises the rescue operations. There are "first class" rescue operations in the Himalaya (for all these rich Western assholes fucking the in the Hinduism and Buddhism so sacred mountain, paying a BUNCH of money for it) although there is enough nutrition and medical support, he said.

Thousands of poor people in the affected regions are waiting for help - very often in vain.
