Federal MSHA Under Investigation in WV Mine Disaster?

The Mine Safety and Health Administration is the subject of a federal criminal investigation surrounding the explosion of the Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia three weeks ago -- a disaster that killed 29 miners. The probe also looks at Massey Energy, the owner of the mine.

This could be seriously bad, if true.

Apparently MSHA has been a revolving door with people leaving it and getting cushy jobs in the mining industry, and vice versa.

The fact that the FBI is investigating and not MSHA speaks volumes. High time someone did something about at least one of these government agencies headed by former executives of the industry they're supposed to regulate.

Congress comes in for its share, apparently the MSHA is a toothless tiger under its present charter.

John

And there-in lies the problem. That, and a workforce that is not empowered to refuse to work a mine that they believe to be dangerous.
