My oldest heading off for his first job tomorrow.
He'll be boarding a Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt tomorrow afternoon for a flight to Frankfurt, GE for his new job in construction management for DoD in Wiesbaden, Germany. He's a freshly minted Civil Engineering graduate of Virginia Tech.
He'll be there minimally 2 years, but I bet quite a bit longer. Way back when, I went on a 3 year gig and stayed for eight. I often wonder why I came back. Needless to say, he's chomping at the bit for the chance at the Fräuleins and German beer. Next weekend is the biggest wine fest in the world (Bad Durkheimer Wurstmarkt) and the following 3 weekends are Oktoberfest. Much fun and adventure in store, I'm sure.

The best of luck to him!
Man, I wish my first job had been that awesome. Nooooo, I had to shovel horses**t in Ohio, ten stalls a day. No Frauleins for me, just poop and flies................

Good for him, Finn. How's it feel to see him following in your footsteps? I imagine you and your wife are pleased that he is going to a safer situation than originally planned. You already have your trip planned to go see him? If your wife is anything like mine, you had better have a couple of handkerchiefs at the ready when you see him off. Wish him luck from your friends here.
Regards,
D-Ray

As interesting as Korea/Japan/Alaska/Hawaii would have been, Germany will be way cooler. Plus, I'm pretty sure his job will be taking him to Turkey, the Czech Republic, Romania, maybe Italy, not to mention other leisure travel opportunities.
I'm sure my wife will let go with a bit of waterworks - maybe me as well. But mine will be out of jealousy, not sadness. My eight years working there were the defining time in my life. He's going to have the time of his life as well. We may be going over for around 10 days at Easter or maybe longer in early Summer. I'm sure he'll have all the beer joints scouted out by then.

How did the sendoff go? I assume he is in Germany by now? I'll bet it will be nice to have the net to keep in touch.

Yep. We awoke to an email this morning that he was getting cleaned up in his hotel room in Wiebaden waiting for his "sponsor" to pick him up and give him a tour of the town. I'm waiting for his report on his first German gasthaus (food & drink) experience. Regarding the sendoff, both Mom and Dad shed a few tears.

Yep. He's a good kid. I've told him that if he comes home from Germany with any money, vacation time, or interesting places left unseen, I'll kick his ass. I'm willing to bet this 2 year (extendable) assignment will grow to at least 5 years.
