From the Tennessean:

We need comprehensive legislation to keep us safe from gun violence

Quote:
An 18 year-old in Tennessee can legally purchase the same gun and ammunition. Mass shootings grab and momentarily hold our attention until the next shooting, but only represent a small percentage of the total number of deaths from homicides, suicides and accidental shootings.

On average, over 40,000 people die and 85,000 are injured from gun violence every year in the United States. No other country in the world even comes close.
Quote:
We are the outlier. The equation is simple — more guns equals more gun violence.

Tennessee fares far worse than many other states, ranking 11th in overall gun violence. Between 2011-2020, gun deaths skyrocketed 48% in Tennessee, homicides increased 103% and suicides increased 20%.
And now their governor has issued an EO for background checks. Hope this is a trend but wouldn't put any money on it yet.

Quote:
Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) on Tuesday signed an executive order attempting to strengthen the state’s background checks for gun purchases. He also called on state lawmakers to pass what are known as red flag laws that would temporarily remove guns from people deemed dangerous.

The ability and ease shown from one who just purchased the rifle on the 4th of April. Within a week was so able to use with such effectiveness. Then add the magazine high capacity of a very deadly round.

This speaks volumes of the need to remove from the public realm.

The ability to fire repeatably from a hi capacity magazine. With just the pulling of the trigger without the need for manually reloading. Pistol, rifle does not matter. The AR15 with the it's round just intensifies the problem.
The use of "Assault Weapon" is a distraction from the issues. Being used as a focal point when a broader view to solve the problem needs our attention.

Both pistol and rifle need to be address with strong regulations. To combat the problems with their use by people with intent on harm towards others.

A general query;
What, exactly, is the rationale and practical point of the second amendment as written in full, in our post-revolutionary era, when other similar countries do fine without it and our proliferation of mass killings?

Oh the rationalizations vary, stuff about hunting and self-defense, and the right of people to take up arms against tyrrany. What tyrrany? The attempts to regulate arms, see?

But the real reason is guns symbolize 'us,' and the ones who don't like them are 'them.' You know--the cultural enemy. It's not rational, it's emotional.

I feel it is would be fine if the full reading of what is written was the case. A "Well Regulated Militia" we have now in the form of the National Guard even could be argued the Armed Forces and Police to some degree. Under civilian control.

Similar countries have guns, the differences being the amount of regulations restrictions to the guns.

The citizens of this country seem to have a group of spoiled brats who want the wild wild west back again.

The gun owners need to address the issue with sustainable substantive solutions. By being silent or down playing, will be out of the discussions and very unhappy with the results.

There will be regulations coming. Can count on that!
