I think I see your problem right there, Ed.

1) Women were a preferred hire.
Proof? Specific examples?

2) Women stared at the same pay BUT all employees received commission as well. When physical work was called for, the men did it. This removed the men from the sales floor so the women were at an advantage in pay.
Valid but understandable and unavoidable. What would you suggest as an alternative?

Again, proof and specific examples. And I don't mean that time you got passed over for a woman.

4) women received maternity leave, men did,'t
Valid but there's a growing trend to offer paternity leave as well.

5) Women were not sent to "tough" areas. You know NJ. In the company I was with the men worked the Paterson, Newark, Passaic, East Orange... stores. Women stayed in Bergen County or Livingston or Wayne... I recall men quieting rather than accept the transfer to some tough neighborhoods. Not a women ever asked.
Again, understandable. Would you want your daughters to work in the places you did and have to walk to their cars alone after dark?

My daughter used to work At Johns Hopkins Hospital which is in a particularly rough part of Baltimore. (Just ask Dr. Ben Carson.) Female employees were escorted to their cars at end of shift every day, day or night. I can't see Foot Locker or Radio Shack hiring security fro that purpose, can you?

You have to recall, this was the late 70's. Corps wanted no suits brought so men got passed over left and right.
So 40 years ago. Things are exactly the same now, I suppose.

You must have been one of those "smitten little manipulated toys" then.

Just like Trump, the "well spoken" carnival barker with an orange spray tan. He and Boehner must go to the same beauty shop.

I am neither defending or advocating this practice but it was common. I think today it's likely much less common. I was just answering you about my personal experience.

Again, I have no link to provide but I hired around 200 people and promoted scores. I know what and why. It was not, all women go first but discrimination against? Never! Ever.

I am aware. Again though. I never felt strongly one way or another about this. I supported and still do maternity leave for the women. I am old school and think men getting this is over the top. My view, equal not the same. See my earlier post to the upset guy. I am not advocating or deriding anything here.

Absolutely not! Again, John, I have no chip. I just see no big discrimination against women. I had always seen women being treated equally or more so. I am fine that it was that way.

The question was in reference to my experience. I said most my experience was before I got my own business.

Actually is was the old timers who were. The guys that had never worked with women previous. It was an open joke.

But honest, why the snark?

Why?

What is the problem?

Be honest. What is it?

You got something to say, say it. No more snide comments are needed.

Guess what, sometimes people disagree with you. It's just not the end of the world.

what is just like Trump?

Are trying to insult me again?

If so, be direct. List your issues and let's go over them one by one. Without snark.

The OP would fit right in on Madmen. I actually think Roger Sterling may be more progressive in outlook...

Ed it sounds like you are speaking of retail, a notoriously bad job. When Florence and I met she was managing a 7000 square foot dress shop. She was also putting in ten and eleven hour days, but as management she did not get overtime. Then they gave her another even larger shop that the previous manager had turned into a disaster area. Shortly after I came down and we were married she asked me what I thought of her job. I told her and she gave two weeks notice and the traveled with me while I was teaching overseas - much better.

But the crap that she had to put up with from her District Manager was just too much so I pissed ijn his cornflakes figuratively.

I can't find a link but you really should read Margaret Sullivan's column in today's WaPo. Quite an eye opener.
