He didn't need an aircraft carrier. All that mattered was to give the impression he had one handy. It's a perfect illustration of 'the art of the flam-flam.'

From the comment section:
Trump will probably attack S. Korea as a warning to the North.

The scary thing here is Mad Dog is a retired marine. McMaster is an active duty Army general. Neither asked the JCOS Navy LtCdr coffee clunkier where the Vinson was for three or four days.
These two are just as isolated and out of touch as Trump is regarding where Navy carrier groups are. That is real scary, when. They are the ones bending Trump's ear on a daily basis.
This supports the assessment that Trump has significantly blocked their ability to hire additional staff. These guys cannot do their jobs well, when they are giving the President bad ops intel about our own assets.

If I had a boat I'd set sail for New Zealand. These guys are about as likely to avoid WWIII as a bear is to stay on a bicycle.

Trump can send the carrier group anywhere he wants to. Or, say he is sending it anywhere he wants to.
Some opinion about it from the hostile media is heart warming to me.

I think it is more like playing chicken with a mad man.
Flam Flam - I'll have to google that one. I kind of know what it means, but precisely, no.

Zero, once again you swing...and miss.
The art of intimidation re Navy carrier groups requires proximity; a carrier group that is 3,000 miles away that travels 25 miles an hour is zero threat for six days. The missile tracking systems work best when intercept plotting occurs at a distance less than fifty to eighty miles from launch, and close to zero degrees from launch to target. Side intercepts have different anomalies that must be factored in; it also is easier to intercept on the going up rather than the going down path, in the old days. I don't know about the most recent developments.
The Nimitz group was the one to brag about, not the Vinson.
Also, NK has about 20 Romeo diesel subs, sold to them by Russia to raise money some years ago. As far as operational stealth, these bad boys were nightmares for us when I served. If ten of these are currently deployed, and two are competently crewed and with solid commands, our carrier groups are sailing in perilous waters off NK.
