Here's an interesting viewpoint from the Daily Kos;

Looks to be possible that several here have adopted some of those tactics.

If you don't possess the cajones to answer for that opinion? YES.
One tack makes you principled, the other makes you a coward.

What is a coward, besides a bad name to call someone? I think it is someone who gives in to fear and therefore shirks duty and responsibility.
How do you know it is fear that motivates a person who chooses to be a refugee rather than participate in a war? Is it possible that they have other motivations?
And then there's the duty/responsibility part. What do you think was shirked? A duty to participate when the politicians make a war? Are there any limits to such duty?
Or a duty to accept punishment if you don't do what the politicians say you must? Personally, I am of the opinion, dating back to the time of Vietnam, that our government does not deserve that sort of sacrifice. If you believe differently, go ahead.
My own feeling is neither returning soldiers, nor war exiles, deserved to be spit upon.

If your answer to taking a political stance is "run," you deserve to be spit upon.

'Political stance?' Sounds like simple civic duty when you term it that way. Writing a letter to a congressman or something.
'Felony conviction and time in the federal penitentiary' is a more exact description, however. Not quite such a simple thing now, is it?
So your conception of 'duty to the state' includes 'participate in a evil war or do felony time?' Make no mistake, an unjustified war is about as evil as it gets. Every crime and cruelty imaginable will happen in a war. Even if a war were fought totally 'cleanly,' as if that would ever happen, unjustified war is still unjustifed destruction, unjustified blood and pain and death. Evil.
I say it's a sentiment worthy of fascists and other militarists, to want to spit on a person who 'runs' from that.
PS: The sig line "'American' means calling everyone who disagrees with you a traitor?" is looking sort of ironic right now, and not in a good way.
