Off Duty, Black Cops in New York Feel Threat From Fellow Police

Even black cops say they get profiled when they are out of uniform.

http://news.yahoo.com/off-duty-black...170110366.html

Quote:
Reuters interviewed 25 African American male officers on the NYPD, 15 of whom are retired and 10 of whom are still serving. All but one said that, when off duty and out of uniform, they had been victims of racial profiling, which refers to using race or ethnicity as grounds for suspecting someone of having committed a crime.

The officers said this included being pulled over for no reason, having their heads slammed against their cars, getting guns brandished in their faces, being thrown into prison vans and experiencing stop and frisks while shopping. The majority of the officers said they had been pulled over multiple times while driving. Five had had guns pulled on them.

1. Do they commit actions requiring their arrest?
2. If they do, do they resist arrest?

When they do that, you can compare them to Eric Garner.

What does that have to do with racial profiling?

My thread starter is time stamped 4:13 pm.

Zeke's response is time stamped 4:15 pm.

Obviously he did not bother to read the article.

You have to wonder what an off duty police officer was in the process of doing when he had his head slammed into a car or had a gun pulled on him.

I've done a lot of stupid shit in my day and have encountered police more times than I care to admit and the worst thing that ever happened to me was once when I was stopped for the heinous crime of having my car registration lapse, my then 14 daughter wanted to get out of the car to get some air and the cop came flying up to her screaming, "Get back in the car! Get back in the car!" At which point, I was blatantly rude and said, "We're in Chinatown...don't you think there are some real criminals you might want to yell at?" Of course, I'm white, so I'm here to tell my story.

No

And when they don't do anything, who should we compare them with? Mahatma Gandi?

From the article:

"It makes good headlines to say this is occurring, but I don’t think you can validate it until you look into the circumstances they were stopped in," said Bernard Parks, the former chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, who is African American.

"Now if you want to get into the essence of why certain groups are stopped more than others, then you only need to go to the crime reports and see which ethnic groups are listed more as suspects. That’s the crime data the officers are living with."

Blacks made up 73 percent of the shooting perpetrators in New York in 2011 and were 23 percent of the population.

While I don't disagree for a moment that racial profiling exists, it deserves an honest discussion and not knee-jerk reactions. Otherwise, we'll be searching old grandmothers at the airport while letting young men of Middle Eastern ethnicity board without scrutiny. Oh, wait ....

Let the record show that Finn supports the profiling of young African American and Middle Eastern males.
