They pretty much destroy everything they confiscate as evidence for prosecution, from those horrid slush metal die cast Saturday night specials to Luger toggle action pistols and custom Benelli shotguns. The solution is to keep them out of the crime cycle.

Here's the eligibility requirements page. http://thecmp.org/cmp_sales/rifle_sa...-requirements/

There are some hoops to jump through--this is a government welfare program. You have to send them a birth certificate or something, and you have to be a member of some 'marksmanship' organization, which is just a matter of sending someone $25.00 or so. But people over 60 can skip the part where you have to show you 'participate in marksmanship activities.' BTW, they send your app to the FBI for a background check. Sometimes the FBI just sits on them. If they do, it's your problem.

Get all the paperwork done and sent in with your credit card # and in three months or so (maybe less) they will Fed-Ex you one of their surplus guns, or other guns they now sell. These include at this time M1 Garands, and .22s. M1s now start at $630, with free shipping.

The bad news: no pistols. There's an amendment for pistols that passed the House. But it won't get through the Senate, and Obama could veto it if it did. Here's all the CMP guys have to say about pistols, way down in the FAQs:

Quote:
Q? Will .45s be available through the CMP?
A. No.
BTW, the Huff Post says they sell over the Internet. Not so. You have to send all the paperwork in on paper.

Am M2 carbine would be fun to have. I wonder whether there are any of those in the program.

(I might settle for an M1 carbine.)

They had some M1 carbines, but they are out of them and they don't expect more.

Cool.

The M1 Garand is a real man's rifle.

Unlike these little .223 tin can plinkers the military uses today.

Heh, I've got several M1 clips and spent brasses that gramps picked up out in the California desert where Patton trained before WWII. I turned in the ancient live rounds along with several .50cal rounds and a 20mm explosive shell to the armorer at El Toro MCAS years ago.

What a big ole steaming pile of crap. No gun is untraceable, and certainly not GI issued ones. More of the anti gunners trying to scare people in to taking away our rights.

Except through a latent print, my three guns are untraceable and one is an M1897 trench gun (WWII).
