Biker Breaks His Femur

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/...f5c_story.html

Sec. of State John Kerry broke his femur bicycling in France.
Jesus, Kerry. Stop looking at those French girls when you're on your bike...

I've (likely) given up skiing and mountain-biking in the last couple of years as I feel myself getting too brittle to bounce back when I hit the ground. His recuperation is likely going take a lot longer than he'd like it to.

It is indeed a very serious injury, considering the bone and his age.

Serious indeed. A fall that breaks a femur could just as easily have killed him.

the break is said to be up at the hip end. He's had both hips replaced. This may be a harder fix if it involves the hip....

Riding all over Paris on the Metro how many times did I miss our stop due to various, uh, distractions.

Riding on a crowded Metro out to La Defense it was not a matter of watching them, it was when they rubbed up against you - oh my!

Then there was the pretty young thing who accosted me in the middle of the road at midnite, I wonder if she ever got 'Sorry Mamselle but I gave at the office' translated?

I don't know anybody who's ever broken a femur (and I've known a few) who didn't have a least a lifelong hitch in their gait as a result, if not worse. A couple have reported that when they're moving around they're pretty much always aware that something bad happened there.

Mine was technically not a Femur fracture as it was a very clean break about mid thigh. That said once I was a month out of the body cast my gait was not affected. It was however a royal PITA.

That's a great outcome for you, Rob. Several that I've known did not fare nearly as well.
