On his advice went to our doctor, he looked at her hands and said gout - gave the name of a specialist.
Today he confirmed the gout diagnosis and said finish the drugs the first guy prescribed and see if the swelling subsides (but he doubts it), out patient surgery scheduled for Aug 30th - with the probability there will be skin grafts needed.
Our grandchildren were coming down on Labor Day weekend but her hand will be unusable so we are having to change the date, and with Madeleine (the oldest) in school that will be tricky.
I am just glad she finally went to have it looked at, after surgery hopefully the pain will be gone. The drugs the first guy prescribed have a list of side effects that just about matches the Black Plague. Just glad it is not MRSA, that bugger is rough.

All the best to Florence! Relieved to see it wasn't MRSA, gout is bad enough. MRSA is a tough fight. She's in my thoughts and prayers.

Indocin (Indomethacin) is most commonly prescribed drug for gout. I have found it effective if you catch it early (sounds like Florence didn't). I have taken it for years for attacks. I hate it because of the side effects, dizziness, stomach discomfort, headaches and heart disturbances.
The only reason I take it is the incredible pain an acute attack can cause.
Keep an eye on her because these side effects can become dramatic.

There are a couple of drugs that were mentionned that she cannot take because of side effects, I don't remember the names offhand. The problem of getting old is that you tend to think arthritis is the cause of most joint problems. I was seriously thinking of the hot parrafin wax treatment which would not have been a good idea.
She has an intense allergic reaction to iodine and has had more than her share of radiation, but I can't talk about that or I would have to kill you. She has had a tough life prior to me coming on the scene.
Thanks for all the good wishes, it warms the heart.

Not only is it Friday, it's Friday the 13th. But none of you give any credence to such things, do you.
I ain't superstitious, but a black cat just crossed my trail . . . .
