NEWBERG, Ore. -- Police arrested a Newberg man after shots were fired that struck the bleachers at a girls high school soccer match. No one was injured.
About 150 fans, coaches and players were escorted into the Newberg High School gym, which was placed in lockdown for about an hour.
Steven Scott Smith, 53, has been accused of unlawful use of a weapon, recklessly endangering another person and disorderly conduct.
The incident began about 8:15 p.m. when police received reports of gunshots near the athletic field where Newberg High and Centennial High were playing soccer.
"Pop" sounds were heard, then a school official heard what sounded like a projectile hitting metal bleachers on the east side of the field, police said. The official ordered the match halted and began moving everyone into the gym. No more shots were fired.
Police started a search for a suspect. Several streets were blocked off but no one was found. Police located a bullet on the track.
They later arrested Smith but provided no details of what led up to his custody.
