Even their slow intercity trains roll at almost 100 mph. And run every hour. Unlikely you'd get there faster in a car. And back then, IIRC, it was fairly inexpensive too.

Yeah,took the TGV from Paris to Reins once and British rail from London to Brighton. Those were the days when we held our standards meetings in interesting places. Even 'trained' from Frankfurt to Nurnburg and from Copenhagen to a town whose name I can't now remember. Started with a B I think.
