It is rather bizarre how that works. I guess it all comes down to territoriality and the sense of possession and belonging.

All the lofty ideals go out the window when the organization's leaders feel there's a threat to the status quo.

To simplify this argument some, couldn't they have just given up? Then
have their day in court to air any grievances with the government.

But they instead held out wanting some kind of apocalyptic ending to the situation.

You're right, they should have surrendered.

Then again, the government shouldn't have created this situation in the first place.

And as I've said before, it wasn't necessary.
