I just discovered "The Sopranos".

I've watched the first few episodes of season one and I am hooked.

My parents moved to Florida from North Jersey just before I was born, so my roots are there. I still have plenty of relatives up there plus I have visited many times and even lived there for awhile, so I feel a connection.

Wow. Took you even longer than me. I finally watched them a couple of years ago, after I subscribed to HBO for Game of Thrones. Damn good, for a TV series. Very Godfather-inspired. Brilliant use of pop music, among other cool things.

James Gandolfini is quite an actor.

I guess I should say was.

RIP Tony.

And to me, North Jersey is the "Real America".

The ultimate melding pot.

Roy Orbison: Black and White Night 30 on PBS

Filmed in 1987 at the Coconut Grove in L.A. with a helluva cast of friends.

Kudos to ABC for doing When We Rise.
Watching the pilot Time After Time.

The movie 'Jackie' is now out on DVD and streaming. I managed to snag a disk at the local library. Here's a short review I've written. (Some of the review may constitute mild spoilers, but I don't think any real dilution of the film's impact is likely....)

The story, first of all, is about coping with trauma. The movie builds
up to it, first we see Jackie cleaning blood from her face, then we see
her unwilling to change on the first day from the pink suit now bearing
some smears of blood. Then more is revealed, and finally, late in the
movie, we get a good look at her husband's shattered head in her lap.

Trauma. We see her alone, horridly alone, in the living quarters of the
White house. The movie, before all else, is one of the most moving
depictions of bereavement I've ever seen.

I will acknowledge here that this cinema will, alas, be boring to those
unable or not inclined to empathize with her in this passage.

The other theme is recovery, and the beginning of Jackie's emergence as
the social icon she became, and the intentional creation of history.
She was never not image-conscious--her insistence on letting the world
see the blood-spattered suit was the first public presentation decision
shown. In the following days, Jackie begins more thoughtfully to lay
her hands on the levers of media power, to create the historical image
of President Kennedy, and herself, and the lost 'Camelot.' Lightly but
evocatively, the movie raises the question of the relation of history
and truth, making clear they are not the same thing, any more than the
dozens of Jackie-look mannequins suddenly appearing in store windows
were a representation of her as a real person.

An afterward--it is clear that distribution of this movie was strangled
in December 2016. There was apparently a non-public struggle over
this--much publicity was done in anticipation of a wide release that
ultimately never happened. Across 99% of the country, the film got
only art-house distribution, and only later, at Oscar-time. I suspect
the decision was ultimately made that a film showing a close look at a
president being assassinated was not a good thing now.

I've given the movie 9 stars on IMDB.

I've been trying to see all the Oscar nominated movies from 2016. Between Jackie and Manchester, both dealing with grief, I was able to emphasize completely with Jackie, with her desire to ensure the president's legacy. Manchester by the Sea left me completely cold; I felt nothing for any of the uninteresting characters.

I'm on the waiting list for Manchester, I'll comment when I see it.

One of the more interesting things about the Jackie drama, to me, was watching her gradually get her feet under herself and become more and more a player in the political/media theater constantly swirling around her.

I saw Manchester, thot it an unblinking honest portrayal dealing with tragedy and loss with a glimpse of daylight.
