Proud to be an American?

(CNN) American patriotism is dwindling.

The numbers, from a new Gallup poll, are the lowest since the polling organization began gauging patriotic fervor this way in 2001.

The numbers have been falling for much of the 21st century, and are down even from last year. In 2018, 47% felt "extremely proud," while this year 45% are saying the same thing.

After two Presidents like Dubya and the Lying Dotard, it's little wonder. That said, I have never really understood the notion of being "proud to be an American." IMO, pride should be reserved for earned accomplishment, not happenstance of birth.

It's instinctive, and instinctive to see it as a virtue. Like most human instincts, it works in a kind of hit-or-miss way, more in some than others.

Wow! You left out Clinton who combined a $1.50/hr economy to a $15.0/hr one and ushered China into the WTO with such favorable terms and rosy expectations.

Proud to be an idiot, are you? Sad!

Obama was also a Globalization supporter. All the presidents in my lifetime have been capitalists.

Regardless of type, pride is a deadly sin.

Being a father's son is also a happenstance of birth.

I wasn't aware that "American" is a species rather than a nationality. Silly me. I've also found the dogmatic belief that we are somehow superior to the rest of the world, IN EVERY WAY, to be a bit annoying as well. If that were true, then Globalization wouldn't have cost us a single job...…..

This and the decline in church attendance might just be a sign that folks are figuring out these things are little more than mind control, especially when deployed as a political tool.

"You don't love America, if you don't follow the party agenda.", is a comment that should never be heard in a free society.

You can only be proud of something you have achieved. So the topic of this thread basically does not make sense, you got that right, Pat.

I am proud to have two 1958 harman/kardon "TA230 Stereo Festival" receivers - I am quite sure that I am the only one who has two of them in Europe - but I can't be proud to be a German. Or a man. Or being 183 cm tall. Or...
