And as of today, the (glass?) ceiling has been hit:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...050561022.html

As you'll note in the article, there are a number of options on the table to postpone "catastrophic" consequences (to borrow some of Geitner's hyperbolic BS) and allow negotiators on the Hill time to reach an agreement.

I haven't yet heard a single responsible, credible person speak out in favor of the GOP's tactics.

"Calls for default on the obligations our government has already incurred are reckless posturing that does nothing to alter future obligations and makes the world doubt our elected representatives’ ability to govern responsibly. We favor raising the debt ceiling promptly and mandating actions to put the federal budget back on a sustainable path."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinio...Q4G_story.html

I suppose you're aware that the downward debt spiral began when the Republican Congress and Dubya refused to extend PayGo in 2002 and passed the Medicare Drug Benefits and massive tax cuts. Now these same people are preaching fiscal responsibility while at the same time threatening a default (or at least a significant rise in interest rate on Treasuries) if their irresponsible proposals don't get enacted.

Shameless.

Boohoohoo, the GOP is playing hardball?

Too bad the Dems didn't pass a budget when they had a chance.

Let's see. Are none of these individuals responsible or credible enough in your estimation?

Kent Conrad
Joe Manchin
Amy Klobuchar
Mark Udall

They have all either suggested they would favor enacting spending cuts tied to raising the debt ceiling, or at least suggested that they're undecided (political speak for I'm in favor of it, but just don't think it would be politically expedient to say so).

Pete you have beaten this poor dead horse enough already. They did not pass one because Dr. No promised to filibuster it to death, and he is just long winded enough to have done it all by his lonesome.

I'm talking about responsible, credible people not currently serving in Congress. Those serving in Congress at the moment are concerned about their next election, plain and simple; not the debt, deficit or anything else.
