After having a long discussion with a favorite nephew last night. One who is a very strong Right leaning politically but able to talk quietly and calmly to and a current Marine Afghanistan War Veteran.
My answer to his question on assault weapons was to require a special permit to own one. One that a background check and training along with a noticeable fee be instituted. Stating that all politicians want to be reelected and way to many guns that there would never be a gun round up. So instead a permit on them makes more sense. One that would be a little weaker then the full auto but enough of o hurdle to eliminate hopefully the ones who need to be.
He agreed but only if it allowed for the ability of one seeking mental help at some time. I said that it should not be a disqualifier if nonviolent in nature. But I felt that answer should be handle by others with more training then him or I.
I told him the fear of losing the ability of owning a weapon might be enough to keep a man from hitting his girlfriend or assaulting someone. But if not then they do not need to have one anyway!
There was an article in PopSci, they made a functional assault rifle with a 3D printer. These printers will be marketed to the masses in the next few years.

That would seem to give more impetus to some of the ideas I have heard for limiting access to ammunition.
