There is little we can do that will help. Is it that they just don't want to admit were wrong, we were right? Or that reality is just to painful to comprehend and deal with, so the fantasy world was created?

Who knows, they will never make any sense to the rest of us. As much as we try to. For no logic to be had in their universe between their ears.
