I wondered about the smoke too.

The link Bob supplied mention that the shotgun was ported. that would explain the smaller plume of smoke to the right.Where would the bottom barrel be ported? Out the bottom would exacerbate barrel rise.

Maybe it isn't. Porting is to reduce muzzle jump in order to get on target for a second shot. If one shoots the top barrel first, barrel jump is diminished for a follow-up shot from the lower barrel (where barrel jump is a non-issue. Just a guess, however.

Right, so a ported barrel will vent upward, not out the side.

How can you tell from that photo whether it is out the side or out the top?

I just can.

Actually, I was going from memory. I looked at the photo again just now and I really can't be sure.

One thing, though. The gun appears to have a ribbed barrel. That would mean that the vents would be in the barrel on both sides of the rib or on both sides of the rib itself. That being the case, you'd expect to see part of the barrel obscured by the smoke, as seen by the camera.

Ah, but what do I know? The first round I ever fired off at a trap range hit the house the launcher was in.

Nope, not mine. Just a shot from Google images. Most of the pics there show porting on both sides of the upper barrel. I don't know how this jibes with the picture of Obama shooting. Maybe Pat has some insight.

(I thing the reason the barrel looks so long in the picture I supplied has to do with camera angle and lens.)
