Florida man and the lottery

Seems a man in assisted living and on Medicaid and SS blows winnings.

http://hereandnow.wbur.org/2014/01/1...ery-squandered

""But Ramsey’s story hasn’t ended well. The 55-year-old, who lives in an assisted living facility and has been deemed mentally incompetent to care for himself, blew through nearly $300,000 of his winnings in only two months — at one point spending $1,500 for a taxi fare and $14,000 in cash checking fees. And then there was his family, who were given watches, new phones, cash gifts and car repairs""

It's all too common.

A San Jose woman has been duped of $300,000 after falling for a Nigerian scam artist on the dating website ChristianMingle.com.

Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Cherie Bourlard said Wednesday that the man, posing as “David Holmes,” an Irish citizen working on a Scottish oil rig, wooed the 66-year-old woman with flowers, phone calls and text messages.

“You get the love drug in you and you end up getting duped,” Bourlard told CBS SF. “But they never met in person.”

The man – who, according to Bourlard, used a picture of a male model on his profile – convinced the woman to invest $500,000 into the fake oil rig.

She had to dip into her retirement account and refinance her house to afford the payments, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

The scammer was busted when his Skype and email addresses were traced back to Nigeria, Bourlard said.

The woman was able to recover $200,000 she wired to a Turkish bank after receiving help from the Santa Clara County district attorney's office.

A man named Wisdom Onokpite – an associate of the scammer who entered Turkey using a false passport – was arrested and jailed when he tried to withdraw the funds, Bourlard told the San Jose Mercury News.

The scammer is still at large.

I don't know how they find out but once you are past 65 they come out of the woodwork like cockroaches.

The other 'legitimate' group are the people running retirement homes, I get at least one a week in the mail.

I've been getting calls from surveyors, evidently in the primary there is a initiative by the long term care industry to deregulate in my state. I started laughing at them when she stated yes there will be pool tables and private rooms along with professional chefs. Create jobs too! Regulations keep them from hiring or paying workers more?

Told her everyone I knew who lives in one went in kicking a screaming! Not to play cards , dance play pool. They would rather stay in their own home eating cat food then go to a facility! Plus they keep cutting trained staff at the ones I visit.
