BOSE?!?! I think you should ban him for that, Don..........
I have people tell me I'm one of the most self reliant types they know. I'm a mechanic and a welder by trade. I maintain/repair my own vehicles, maintain/remodel/repair my own home. Plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, the whole nine yards. I often restore my own vintage gear, although I am not an electronics tech, so some of the more involved stuff I will pay others to do. But, I have built my own crossover networks, equipment racks, speaker stands and various other items. And I live alone, which means I do my own cooking, cleaning, laundry, yardwork, etc, etc.
I am a four year Navy veteran, F-14 Airframe Mechanic. Served on two cruises and participated in an exercize that brought me with sight of Soviet Military. I have seen the Red Star directly over my head.
I was raised to be self reliant, but I was also often reminded by my parents that "The world is much bigger than yourself.", "No man is an island." and most importantly, "Do unto others as you would have done unto you.".
They wanted me to understand that serving others is as important as taking care of yourself. Hence my military service, my volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity, my serving on the negotiating team when I was a union member and my voluntary participation on various efficiency teams; OEE, 5S, Kaisen and CI on the job.
(My current boss, who is in real estate on the side, and I "flipped" houses up until just before the market crashed. We made a ton of money together. Now, we're sweatin' it out in the coffee factiory. Oh well, such is life.)
Anyhow, it seems to me that modern conservatism is, by it's nature, a selfish and narrow ideology. I don't much care for it. I'm sure some of you will disagree, and that's fine. But that's how I see it.
