My Dad was is nearly 100% self-reliant. He is an engineer by vocation (now retired) and an inventor by avocation.

I watched him fix everything and anything whether it needed fixing or not. If it didn't exist, he designed and built it. I always wondered why he never threw things out, but then sometimes, maybe after even as many as 4 decades, I' see him raid one of his storage caches for the perfect parts to fix my son's minibike, a wadher or dryer, color TV, stopwatch, you name it.

Pretty cool stuff, and I guess I inherited those traits.

I've noticed that we both do a lot of pro-bono "fixing" of things for others, but we both resent it when something is arbitrarily demanded of us (as in taxes).

I didn't know fixing minibikes was a political philosophy.

Interesting, I never thought about taxes like that. I have always been willing to do my part.

True dat. If there's one thing that taxes aren't, it's arbitrary.

There are all sorts of insults that get tossed around in political forums, but to connect someone with Bose equipment simply because they don't agree with you is just flat wrong. It seems like a rush to judgment to me. Is that a conclusion that you can make without any evidence of the gear these folks actually own. That's political opportunism at its worst. Sounds like downright solder libel to me.

BOSE?!?! I think you should ban him for that, Don..........

I have people tell me I'm one of the most self reliant types they know. I'm a mechanic and a welder by trade. I maintain/repair my own vehicles, maintain/remodel/repair my own home. Plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, the whole nine yards. I often restore my own vintage gear, although I am not an electronics tech, so some of the more involved stuff I will pay others to do. But, I have built my own crossover networks, equipment racks, speaker stands and various other items. And I live alone, which means I do my own cooking, cleaning, laundry, yardwork, etc, etc.

I am a four year Navy veteran, F-14 Airframe Mechanic. Served on two cruises and participated in an exercize that brought me with sight of Soviet Military. I have seen the Red Star directly over my head.

I was raised to be self reliant, but I was also often reminded by my parents that "The world is much bigger than yourself.", "No man is an island." and most importantly, "Do unto others as you would have done unto you.".
They wanted me to understand that serving others is as important as taking care of yourself. Hence my military service, my volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity, my serving on the negotiating team when I was a union member and my voluntary participation on various efficiency teams; OEE, 5S, Kaisen and CI on the job.

(My current boss, who is in real estate on the side, and I "flipped" houses up until just before the market crashed. We made a ton of money together. Now, we're sweatin' it out in the coffee factiory. Oh well, such is life.)

Anyhow, it seems to me that modern conservatism is, by it's nature, a selfish and narrow ideology. I don't much care for it. I'm sure some of you will disagree, and that's fine. But that's how I see it.

Dave

No one in society is 100% "self-reliant".

We all are dependent on the networks society has evolved.

I know this is a recurrent theme from many on the right but it is simply ego gratifying and hollow.

for the record (LOL, record) there is a strong probability that most folks here have systems that would befuddle you.
