I was referring to the film and the mention of Brits economy...also the living of some people in cardboard boxes.
Every country...city... has areas that are a shame upon us.
I believe a country's citizens should come first. Just as in a family...charity and the dignity of citizens begins at home. We do pay for those in need to be cared for. Give me more credit than assuming all Brits live in squallor. Thats like saying only some bears crap in the woods!

Maam to begin with the Sun tabloid is hardly a source of unbiased information in fact the press in England is the closest thing to squalor you can find, especially the bits owned by Murdoch.

Someone earlier mentioned colonialism and this is where Britain has a problem. Any citizen of any Commonwealth country has easy entry to Britain, the British citizens are not crazy about it but 'tis the law of the land. When I was travelling on my Canadian passport I wound up in the Commonwealth line, took bloody forever because the customs officers really were looking for reasons to deny these people entry. When they saw my Canadian passport it was "Have a nice day sir." and whisked me through.

After Florence and I married and I was naturalized it was much quicker because I no longer had to use that line.

There is a segment of British society (the local shopkeeper) that is dominated by Brits of Pakistani descent. They are a very hardworking and strongly family oriented part of the fabric that is British society. There is some resentment towards their hardnosed and tough business practices but they are proud British citizens. To reduce them to a false charicature who is only happy with a new leather jacket and free BMWs on the government teat is offensive and appeals to the nativists (code for racist) element in the UK. Just like here, there is a vocal tiny minority of skinheads with swastikas and iron crosses tattooed all over them who this kind of propaganda appeals to. I'm surprised it appealed to you enough to post a link.
I guess I can put the tin foil hat back in it's box now and stop searching for racism where it isn't. Sorry if I offended you.

I don't know about the hero bit, but since I married Florence it is as close to perfection as any man could wish. In fact I cannot see any room for improvement, unless someone has a spare million they don't need.

Lineage? Well Dad was in the woolen mills by age 12, into the glassworks in his teens. His Mother, my Grandmother Sarah Ann died when he waas only nine. Grandfather Sam was a mason, the kind who lays brick and stone, not the kind who wears those fancy aprons..My maternal Grandfather was a shepherd even though his name was Mason - lots of sheep in Oxfordshire even today. Grandmother Harriet knew how to squeeze a dollar and they ended up quite well off after emigrating to Canada.

But yes, by and large good British stock, though genealogical research has found the odd skeleton rattling about in some closets.

I've heard you might have a Saracen or two rattlin' about in the closet like most of us British descendants? They sure helped western Europe with a couple novel ideas like mathematics and medicine several centuries ago. Dang Muslims and Mohammedeans!
