Staring Gary Cooper.

Why on earth didn't you stop at one?

I had a one hour commute by train morning and night. I left work two blocks from the station at 4:30 the train did not leave until 5:20, had to pass the time. Then again although I was a fast reader I confess that I did not read all of AS as that would have spoiled my dinner. I had already exhausted the family library before I even left school. Austen, Shakespeare, Dickens, Eliot – well Mary Anne Evans in truth, it seemed then that the only way a woman could get published was to pretend to be a man. For example the Brontė Sisters, who published as Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, and Jane Austen who after many refusals was finally published under her own name. It sort of left me with an almost Victorian writing style.

What do you call that?

Mull it over for a while.

Short sighted, selfish, stingy, self centered, simple minded running out of words beginning with s to describe them but will end with Scrooged.

I call it regressive income tax.

A shifty trick when FDR started it. A crime against the nation when Reagan cut the income taxes, esp at the top, but raised the FICA and Medicare payroll taxes. That move was a naked case of robbing from the poor and giving to the rich.

And, it spoiled them, like little kids who were allowed to empty the cookie jar. Now, they demand more tax cuts, deregulation and even more docile labor. Even if they get it, they probably won't create any more worthwhile jobs anyhow. The offshore accounts will just continue to grow ever fatter.

So, why bother giving them anything?

Dave

They all spend the money. Public or private makes little difference. The bank spends your 401k money and shows you a bunch of numbers on a web page. If the bank should go under and the government doesn't bail them out, it's YOU that watches his retirement savings disappear. Where do you suppose it went?

Don't hand me your simplistic nonsense. I'm smarter than that.
