It is a requirement in some of their classes that they look up stuff on the net.

I don't know about you but, when I look stuff up on the net, it sure feels like learning.

Well that's because you spend your time looking for information and edgucation.
Some spend all their time watching cat vids on Youtube.

A while back when they were having all the wall st. protest, BART was jamming the signals in their stations and got in trouble for it. I just don't know who you would get in touch with about it, school board? and let them correct it internally.
I understand kids should follow the rules and that's fine. However, I see this as a safety issue, something could happen where as people would need their phones in an emergency.

But..... I think if I were the teacher I would use the fact that students are so engaged with their phones/ technology as a tool to keep their attention while learning.
Perhaps a history contest whereby each team could use their phone once to look up an answer.
Or use texting in an English/ composition class to emphasize the value of traditional writing in communication.
I'm sure there are plenty of ways to integrate the technology into the classroom in a useful way.

I am laughing at the picture in my mind of an English composition in text speak.

Yes, kind of like when we had emergencies when I was in school. Those not thought of yet cell phones were indispensable.

If it isn't a teacher, I would be concerned. Who knows what some unstable kid might be planning these days.

We were not having individuals going into schools, murdering as many people as they can back then either. Some of the recent events have had children and teachers calling the police letting them know what's going on inside as the events unfolded.
Believe it or not cell phones have saved countless lives because of the speed they can get a message out for help. Most parents have bought phones for their kids specifically as a safety tool and to be able to reach them immediately. We have natural disasters every year in this country where schools have been affected and destroyed and communication is paramount.
Do you really want school districts disabling the communication system in their vicinity.

So?
Until someone starts shooting up the school keep the damned thing in your book bag and turn it down to vibrate. Then, when you hear gunfire, take it out and dial 911. It ain't there to play with when you are supposed to be paying attention in class.
If they want to talk to their friend on the other side of the room then they should have to try to pass notes while the teacher isn't looking, just like we had to back in the day.

Cell phone's are estimated to cause over 25% of all motor vehicle accidents and those are the number one cause of teen death. I would say they have cost as many lives as they have saved. Personally, I don't have a cell phone and would never buy one for one of my kids. If the school necessitates one, they can make them available.
I don't think that schools should disable the communications in their vicinity, and never alluded that I did. It is and always has been against federal law. The FCC had a public notice about it 10 years ago (below).
