Netanyahu has explicitly defended the destruction in Gaza by citing US bombing of axis cities in WWII. 'You killed civilians.' Afaik, it was suspected if not known that plans were argot for an operation like this, but were discounted as being to complex for Hamas to pull off. Apparently, some folks took the warnings at face value and acted on them.
