"The people" belong to all religions and no religion. That's why the separation of church and state exists. It protects both the government and those of us who profess a religion other than the "dominant" one (or who profess no religion at all) from the influence of theocrats and, at the same time, prevents the government from placing restrictions on the individual's right to religious expression.

In this case, we're talking about a Constitutional amendment, not just a law. If you see a Constitutional test of the separation of Church and State making its way toward the SCOTUS, you'd better run for the hills! We have probably four sitting justices who are half-crazy flesh-mortifying Opus Dei fanatics.
