The search for gravitational waves.

An announcement is to be made on the 100 anniversary of Einstein theory of relativity, re the search for gravitational waves.

The detection of gravitational waves seems to be an extremely difficult feat.
How can scientists be certain what they detect?

Are they trying to arrange an experiment to fit a theory?
