A couple more things Dad mentioned to me. He said in his paratrooper training out of around 320 enrolled only 140 passed or thereabouts. He mentioned 2 broken backs, not from chute failure but from the total force of the rate of decent (much much faster than todays chutes), the pendulum effect, and wind speed (sideways movement). They hit the ground HARD and if you were at just the right place in the pendulum swing, crack.

Also, he went from boot camp to advanced infantry, then paratrooping. He expected to go straight to Korea but they sent him to ordnance (welding in his case). He found out later his was held in reserve for rapid deployment to Europe in case there was a problem with the USSR.

LOL! You might get them eventually you old curmudgeon

Speaking more to my dad, he said they used the old late WW2 T7 parachutes. Right when he got out they switched to the more user friendly T10s. He said he's spoke to folks that jumped with modified T7s but doubts anyone would try now with unmodified ones, too brutal. He also mentioned they jumped from 1000 feet. I could not find a pic of an unmodified T7 in the air.

Never could figure out why anyone would want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane?

My bro in law made some stills out of the video. This is right before I stepped out onto that little black step:

Found out today what I am going to do for vacation in April. My son's band is booked for five or six shows at South by Southwest in Austin.

Regards,

D-Ray

Well, if you're going to be stuck in Austin for a couple of days, I'd suggest a day trip west into the Hill Country...it's actually quite pretty. And while it's the opposite direction, the Walburg German Restaurant makes some dandy cordon bleu...or at least they did 25 yrs ago.

It's like an oasis in a vast desert of fried okra.
