It would actually take a very small percentage of the populace deciding to avoid all things Chinese to scare the retailers.

One stupid question from the stupid little guy from Germany, please do not kill me for that folks...!
Why don't you Americans buy more American cars? Was it actually not to avoid that Detroit went to hell? A boycott of chinese stuff is for sure a nice idea Erik, but I think it would be much more important for the American economy to stop buying zillions of those crappy German SUV cars, for example.

Owning the German cars is about status and appearance here for the most part.
The original reason folks went the Japanese route in the 70's/80's was reliability and fuel economy. Something Detroit could not really offer until a bit later when they partnered with the Japanese companies.

Fuel costs more than eight dollars a gallon in Germany. I cannot understand that fuel economy is an issue over there, gas is almost as cheap as water in the USA, from the European point of view.
So the Detroit bosses were just too arrogant to change the basic concepts of the cars, or they were too stupid, or both. Unemployment, poverty, crime, despair was their seed. Congratulations Ford et al.

I agree with your aims.....but at Walmart one can by a pair of new blue jeans for about $10 bucks (ten years ago you could anyway).....with such hard times and low wages that are a fact of life today it would be hard to get that shopper back to Levis at say $40.
When I was a kid my mom would take me to Sears and buy new Levi's for like $30 at the mall....maybe three pairs for the school year. That was a not an insubstantial sum back then in the 70s.
things are different now.

Problem here are Levi's are only "assembled" here from denim and buttons from out of country.

My 501's aren't even assembled here. The two pair I just looked at are made in Nicaragua and Colombia.
I have always tried to buy USA as much as I can afford, but there are just some things that I don't use enough to spend the extra cash on...tools being the big one. If the price difference isn't too substantial I almost always buy domestic.
