Buffalo Springfield and the successor CSN&Y.

Tonio K.

well there's a riot in the courthouse, there's a fire in the street
there's a sinner bein' trampled by a thousand pious feet
there's a baby every minute bein' born without a chance
now don't that make you want to jump right up and start to dance?

all's you gotta do is grab your partner by the hair
throw her down and leave her there

And Tonio's musical godfather...Country Joe McDonald

Come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, and don't hesitate
To send your sons off before it's too late.
You can be the first ones in your block
To have your boy come home in a box.

I never heard of this one. Thanks, BH

I assume you mean the Tonio K. It's "The Funky Western Civilization" from his first album "Life in the Foodchain".

If you're interested further, here's the discography page from Allmusic.

http://www.allmusic.com/artist/tonio...29/discography

Krikorian's 70's and 80's stuff received very favorable reviews.

Actually Stever Earle's last two albums are great protest music.
I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive and The Low Highway.

You're right. He has some really good stuff. His Krikorian name sounded familiar from somewhere, but not Tonio K. I was probably too into AC/DC, Nugent, The Eagles, and The Stones back then.

Names and suggestions most welcomed.
I suppose that it's cliche' to mention CSN&Y, but "Ohio" and "Chicago" were to me classic protest songs. Neil Young's "Southern Man" probably fits in there as well as Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth." Later stuff by Neil includes "Rockin' in the Free World."

A fairly modern band that includes considerable political content is Rage Against the Machine. They are a bit of a cross between hip hop and rock, but the song "Bulls on Parade" is pretty good protest stuff. One of the lyrics was "Rally 'round the family, with a pocket full of shells." They also cover "Ghost of Tom Joad."

Uncle Tupelo has paid tribute to the folk protest tradition with their "March 16-20, 1992" album. Pay attention to "Coal Miners" and "Atomic Power."

The Bottle Rockets, a group that derived from Uncle Tupelo, has a terrific song "Welfare Music."

You want to go back awhile, how about Ledbelly - 'The Bourgeois Blues'

And did you forget about Woody Guthrie?

Sorry for the overkill, but I love political music. On the other hand, Lee Greenwood makes me want to puke.

Regards,

D-Ray

I have Woody but somehow forgot to mention him. I think I have some Ledbelly in my blues collection. I do like Uncle Tupelo and the bands they've spawned. I'll look for Bottle Rocket ovar at Amazon. BTW, I'm rather fond of Levon Helm's work.

The quality of the work by Uncle Tupelo and its progeny is something we can definitely agree on. I'd give Jay Farrar of Son Volt a slight nod as the best songwriter and singer, but the quality work that Wilco and Jeff Tweedy have put out is quite the treasure as well. Brian Henneman certainly brings some wit to his songwriting for the Bottle Rockets. I'd compare the body of work from the former members of Uncle Tupelo favorably to the body of work from the former members of Buffalo Springfield.

Regards,

D-Ray

I'm a fan of all of them. I'm using Son Volt's Honky Tonk cover as wallpaper on one of my laptops. I missed hearing about Bottle Rocket. Speaking of music, is your son still playing?
