If it isn't a teacher, I would be concerned. Who knows what some unstable kid might be planning these days.

Yes, kind of like when we had emergencies when I was in school. Those not thought of yet cell phones were indispensable.
We were not having individuals going into schools, murdering as many people as they can back then either. Some of the recent events have had children and teachers calling the police letting them know what's going on inside as the events unfolded.

Believe it or not cell phones have saved countless lives because of the speed they can get a message out for help. Most parents have bought phones for their kids specifically as a safety tool and to be able to reach them immediately. We have natural disasters every year in this country where schools have been affected and destroyed and communication is paramount.

Do you really want school districts disabling the communication system in their vicinity.

So?

Until someone starts shooting up the school keep the damned thing in your book bag and turn it down to vibrate. Then, when you hear gunfire, take it out and dial 911. It ain't there to play with when you are supposed to be paying attention in class.

If they want to talk to their friend on the other side of the room then they should have to try to pass notes while the teacher isn't looking, just like we had to back in the day.

But..... I think if I were the teacher I would use the fact that students are so engaged with their phones/ technology as a tool to keep their attention while learning.

Perhaps a history contest whereby each team could use their phone once to look up an answer.

Or use texting in an English/ composition class to emphasize the value of traditional writing in communication.

I'm sure there are plenty of ways to integrate the technology into the classroom in a useful way.
Sure.

Today's kid's don't need to learn shit.

All they need to be able to do is look up the answers on the net.

It is a requirement in some of their classes that they look up stuff on the net.

I would think you could use google as a tool to teach critical thinking skills.

As far as kids being kids they need to learn responsibility and a time for everything but that's the parents and teachers job. Meaning you don't use a machine to teach, you interact with them and teach self control and that they have other responsibilities in life.
