At the present, lithium storage cells are the standard. What is the ecological cost of producing and recycling them compared to their benefits?

Lithium batteries are here to stay, especially for use in electric vehicles. Not sure if these have found their way into golf carts or forklifts (ours uses lead acid cells and the added weight actually is useful in this application).
