"Supreme Court hears case on N.Y. town’s practice of opening meetings with a prayer"

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politi...y.html?hpid=z3

They do this in my town, too. It never sat well with me.

Q.) What's wrong with a "moment of silence" wherein folks are given time to quietly pray, meditate, or "sext" their mistress, as the see fit? Why do some people insist it must be Judeo-Christian prayer?

A). Insecurity.

Group identity rituals. Certain personality types seem to just live and die for group identity rituals.

I don't even like the moment of silence. The act implies that one is supposed to pray.

If people want to pray that's fine.... But do it some other time.... Not during a public meeting.

I have always felt a moment of silence if left at that, as a private reflective time. But prayers? Church and state separate, a lofty concept but never fully implemented in our history.

Around here the mega churches have a book with lists of who to do businesses with. Or have any problem talking politics from the pulpit the few times I went to another church. Being a Catholic so going to another church one called " Christian" and being told I'm not one always struck a nerve.

Barney
Barney, I have a friend who belongs to some "church"* whose members are strictly local Christian business owners. He told me all about his "church" during a phone call a few months ago. They network strictly through members of the church, unless they have no choice but to go to outsiders. They also have a list of businesses owned by undesirables like non-Christians, gays, unionized businesses and those with "questionable" (Read; Liberal) political beliefs that they avoid "...if at all possible". They are also overtly politically active......Republicans, of course. But, they're careful to keep all financial donations separate from the church. (Because, I'm sure, all of this "church" BS probably has more to do with tax exemption than the teachings of Christ.)

Anyhow, point is; Does any of this sound "free market" to you?

It sure doesn't sound like it to me. It sounds like nothing but back scratching, black listing and oligarchy. It sure is nice to know we have such "great Americans" out there protecting our freedom..........(sarcasm)

Dave

(* I think it's more of a networking "cult" for avaricious businessmen than a church.)

Government officials don't need to say a prayer every time they hold a meeting.

We're the ones who need to say a prayer.

Something like, "Jesus Christ, I pray those #X*+$$!!!..."

One could always use the time to regurgitate a little.

And businessmen like my buddy Smitty and his "church" are in the background greasing palms and filling up SuperPACs. You're right. We should all pray..............

Don't they still open sessions of Congress with prayer?
