Paraphrasing, then: If this wasn’t a function of politics, it is an act of heinous violence that represents precisely the sort of horrible, surging crime that Fox News has been warning its viewers about endlessly for weeks. If it was a function of politics — presumably politics that cast Pelosi negatively — then it’s simply division, something that lamentably reflects our nation’s sad state under Biden.

It is admittedly hard to speak off-the-cuff on television, though this is DeAngelis’s job. But again, her arguments did not occur in isolation. They were just one early segment. You can also see Fox News hosts and guests downplaying the “where is Nancy” question, blaming the city’s politics and, of course, somehow, “defund the police.”

Where DeAngelis landed, though, is precisely where you’d expect a Fox commentator to land. If it wasn’t politically motivated, it’s because of the crime wave and therefore the Democrats’ fault. If it was, it’s because Biden didn’t unite America … and therefore the Democrats’ fault.

A simple, effective formula.

A couple of weeks ago, I received a phone call from a woman who until recently had served in a position of regional prominence in the Texas Republican Party. The woman had read something I’d written pertaining to the insurrection at the Capitol and found it to be thoroughly inaccurate. She wished to inform me that friends of hers had been there on January 6 and had seen nothing remotely riotous taking place. But, the woman added, whatever violence had occurred that day had been the work of antifa. She then said that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s videotaped phone conversations that afternoon, in which she implored governors to deploy National Guard troops to the Capitol, had been entirely staged. The woman closed by declaring that those who remained in federal custody for January 6–related offenses were being “politically persecuted.” When I asked her where she had gotten all this information, the woman replied that she had done her own research.

Nothing riotous taking place and violence was the work of ANTIFA. Only a MAGA mind is capable of such mental gymnastics.

Didn't see the TV coverage, won't look at replays of the video coverage and doing their own research involved watching FAUX "news" and other Reich-wing propaganda outlets. If asked why if it was ANTIFA the why didn't Donny take so long to act? Such folk will say either Pelosi's fault or that he did act. Ask why if it was ANTIFA why did tRump say "we love you"? Such folk will right about then stop talking to you.
