Many believe him, and think the people who say he is lying are lying.
This is bundled with the sentiment that the lying is of no great importance, what's important is that he is the leader of 'their people,' as opposed to 'those other people.' Content and nuance may vary, but the basic sentiment is widespread, in the base. For the 40% or so of Republicans that don't qualify as 'base,' they still think he supports conservative values they hold, and that what's important to them policy-wise will advance better under him, whether their 'pet issue' is abortion/fix the Supreme Court, or low taxes, or reduce regulation, or rein in welfare, or secure the border, or whatever.
