Seems a hundred years ago when I was told to eat my vegetables because starving kids in China would kill for them.

I have been fighting with our local school to offer Mandarin Chinese as a language elective.

Instead my daughter has to take Spanish.

They've offered Chinese in schools around here for years. There's even a Chinese immersion curriculum. They also have French, German, Spanish, and Russian. This is a good thing.

Reminds me of a joke;
What do you call somebody who speaks 3 languages - Trilingual
What do you call somebody who speaks 2 languages - Bilingual
What do you call somebody who speaks 1 language - American

Here the boogeyman was "Starving Armenians". Or "The Poorhouse" I was always accused of driving my po' little daddy into. Kids in Poorhouses had to eat gruel & suet, I didn't think either one sounded very appetising...For his part, my po' l'il ole Daddy was always threatening to take me 'n' my sister back to the Orphanage, & get his $19.95 back...They were running a special that day on spoiled merchandise, big kids that weren't cute anymore & ate too much gruel 'n' suet besides...

Mother did it quite simply during the depression - "If you don't eat it for dinner you will get it for lunch tomorrow."
