Hakeem Jeffries on why the 'bipartisan coalition' idea hasn't flown so far. Basically says McCarthy wouldn't have it. Says they are still trying. https://wapo.st/45qulMJ

I've seen a few mentions that Jeffries should be made Speaker. Oh hell no! Not with the GQP clown show driving the Republican majority. That would be like throwing a tiny bottle of perfume into a dumpster of rotting food that been left out in the sun on a hot day.

I had addressed this a couple of days back in Post #43 responding to Dondi. when he also claimed that the Dems sank McCarthy's speakership.

Dumb question and wrong implication.
All members of the House of Representatives get to vote, so the speaker is voted by all the members present in the House and not appointed by one party as you imply. It so happened that no Democrat voted for McCarthy (by voting Nay) because that is customary to let each party choose their own leader in the House. On the Vacate vote, every Democrat in the House voted to remove McCarthy (told you they could vote). He is not their leader, they don't trust him so why not? If they voted No, that implies tacit support so the only choice they had was to vote Yay to Vacate.

I still can't figure out McCarthy other than he is unprincipled, highly partisan, would have given his limbs away to get elected Speaker. Yet he was highly popular within his conference perhaps due to his fund raising and electioneering prowess.
So why did he in the last minute get the CR passed bypassing their House rules with Dem's help? Pressure from the Senate? After all Trump was demanding a shutdown supported by the Freedumb caucus and they are all Trump's lapdogs. So why? Didn't he know he will get booted out or was he just tired having to deal with Getz and his thugs and just wanted out and decided to go out with fireworks and make history? And this is only a temporary reprieve and what happens in the next 45 days (5 gone already), elect a new Speaker and get a budget passed? So far the few spending bills they have passed are DOA in the Senate. This entire episode seems to be a case of playing with matches and setting off a firestorm.

If the clown show causes shutdown next time he won't be front and center of it so there is that.

Perhaps not all that complicated because both sides miscalculated.
McCarthy after passing the CR with the Dems expected them to vote to keep him as Speaker. Keep a known Repugnant rather than deal with an unknown. But then even I was quite shocked at the Dem House members assessment of McCarthy and once I read all the gory little details, accepted that their voting him out was the only thing to do. If one cannot trust a guy, best to dump him now and they did. Kudos to the House Dems voting as a group flipping the middle finger to McCarthy.
Gaetz himself may have miscalculated. Here is a guy only interested in brinkmanship and fundraising for himself, and he hails from one of the safest districts, so why does he need all this campaign money? And his dad is filthy rich and also a politician. Instead of just a Freedumb shitshow, McCarthy got booted out which he also did not expect, figuring the Dems will bail him out.
Now he is the most hated politician in DC surpassing Ted Cruz.

Centrist GOP effort to reinstate McCarthy picks up steam after Israel attacks
Reinstalling the Californian, the thinking goes, is the only way to quickly deliver aid to Israel.

Gaetz is the only person in the whole congress who sticks to the script.
