Hybrids are showing expensive fixes.......
The first wave of hybrids are starting to age and looks like some are starting to fail, my mom took in her Lexus 400H when the dashboard lit up and while it was still under warranty the total was $8600! For the electronics!!!!!! The dealer said they had never had an issue till last year and had 7 in for same thing, as these cars continue to age its gonna be interesting to see what they cost to fix.
My father is buying her a new model without Hybrid because they dont seem to make sense and he got a good bonus, a study showed that the premium you pay for the Hybrid drive calculated against actual savings will take roughly 7 yrs to payoff so unless you intend to keep the car long term the are bad business.
BTW the 400H I am talking about is a 2006 with 32,000 miles and as noted the repair didnt cost her anything out of pocket but the coverage doesnt last forever and not sure if it transfers to second, third owners.

Geez! $8600.00 would have bought more than 10 1/2 of my car. I've been driving it for more than 6 years. (Knock on wood.) That translates into more than 60 years of driving! How many people drive for more than 60 years? I think I'll stick with buying used and pamper them.

My car is a '91 Pontiac wagon with 3300cc six cylinder and overdrive auto tranny. Last time I took an extended trip (over the mountains and into Chatlotte) I averaged 26mpg. Hardly a "big traditional SUV".

Chev just sent me a $1000 off loyal customer coupon if I want to buy a 2009 or 2010 model but the way I see it my 2000 Impala is only just broken in at 46,000 miles.

The way I see it, you're right.
IMHO, a motor vehicle is nothing more than a tool. It hauls you and what you need from Point A to Point B. My ideas of customizing one are ladder racks, trailer hitches, electronic brake controls, tool boxes, etc. No fuzzy dice, "bumper snickers", superchargers, trick wheels, or other useless crapola which doesn't serve a specific purpose.
Well, I did put a "I brake for tailgaters" bumper snicker on my old Dodge after the Pepsi truck rear ended it...my inner child got the best of me.
The less crap you have on one, the less crap you have to maintain/repair. You couldn't give me a hybrid.

You got me. What car in the seventies got 26 mpg?
Hybrids, it looks like their day is coming. I'm fine letting the greenies work out the bugs
