'The Republican Party is getting smaller' -- and now it's literally killing off its voters: Ex-GOP aide

https://www.rawstory.com/kurt-bardella-msnbc/

Were it not for the Electoral College and the completely unfair advantage rural states have in the Senate, the GOP would be toast.

^^ I think this is the real reason for the recent flurry of activity for voter suppression in some red states like FL, GA and AZ. Trump yelling election fraud gave them cover and losing GA and AZ was a wake up call. As long as GOP controls the Senate, nothing can and will be done unless they also have the WH and the House. And they are willing to wait and their cult loves them owning the Libs. Also it helps the GOP that the cult is not looking for meaningful legislation, just confrontation. Bombos and bozos like MTG, Bobert, Gohmert, Gosar, Biggs, et al. are rock stars in their midst.

As bad as the GOP may be, they are still necessary for an adversarial two party system. Giving a single party absolute national power would lead to something much worse than the GOP is now, I don't care what name you give it.

In a purely academic sense divorced from current reality I would agree.

However, the real world situation is that the Republican Party has not been a responsible political party for over a decade, and their behavior has only gotten worse as their bad behavior has been rewarded.

The GOP is now an existential threat to democracy.

The problem is the GOP is determined no matter the costs or results to eliminate the two party system.
It is very apparent they do not want to work in a bipartisan give and take with anyone. Everything for them has to be approved my the leader of the party. If not hey have been know to turn on fellow republicans who were outside of the leaders wishes.

Dark days ahead for the country. The GOP needs to place the blame onto others to deflect. Also to keep the hate and anger motivation as a distraction.

Yes we need a second party to maintain an adversarial two party system. Today's GOP is not that second party. As noted by Oerets they're out for single party rule and they aim to be that party.

We only have one political party. That's the problem. The other so-called party has become what Eisenhower said long ago:

I've been advocating a third party for most of my life. Unfortunately party affiliation seems to be as hard to change as any other belief system.
