Or better yet, one could never even apply for citizenship, enjoy the privileges, and avoid the obligations.

I expected that misdirection. It completely misses the point, however, that citizenship, like membership in a church can be renounced. In each case, people retain their status because of the perceived consequences of the alternative.

Sorry was but it does not work that way. When I was here on an H1B, then a Green Card, I still paid all the taxes, fed, state, property, FICA, etc. I just did not get a say in how they were spent.
