Putin and Obama will celebrate together D-Day tomorrow in the Normandy. I wish Putin on occasion of this very special day and location would come to his senses.

He has achieved his objective at some cost.

1 Ensure the survival of his naval base.

2 Destabilize Ukraine to prevent it joining NATO.

No need now to overplay his hand and enfuriate Merkel. He needs her.

The 3rd Reich wasn't universally popular in Germany and decidedly less so toward it's inevitable end, there were doubtless otherwise patriotic German citizens relieved with the coming prospect of the end of it.
