Richest German dies aged 94

Karl Hans Albrecht is dead. Together with his late brother Theo he founded in 1962 the supermarket chain "Aldi". His fortune in 2012 has been estimated at ca. 25 billion dollars.

He was an extremely shy person. He was almost never seen in public. There are not even more than some three old photos showing this legendary entrepreneur.

Albrecht was not only shy, he was also very modest despite of his huge success. This state of always being grounded is one reason why Germans are economically so successful. (There was a thread about this topic somewhere else in this forum recently I think...)

The concept of apprenticeship is also a reason for German success, for lack of a better word. They take their trades seriously -- to the point of craftsmanship. My uncle is a master baker and cringes when he sees baked goods that are less than perfect.

When he was 16 he started a training as shop assistant. In 1946 he took over the grocery store of his parents.
