We have had peace in the US for about 150 years, except for some unlucky guys who go somewhere else to fight.

In Europe it's coming up on 70 years of peace with quite a bit fewer exceptions (if you leave the Balkans out of it).

We are probably quite fortunate to have had just one big internecine war in order to resolve the "union" problem. Had the Civil War not occurred when it did, there is a very good chance that "America" would have become balkanized, or at least that the slave and non-slave states would have eventually been at war anyway. God Bless President Lincoln for taking the stand to save the Union and thereby produce a long-term solution that allowed the United States to develop without constant warfare against itself.

Would have, it could not be more balkanized than it is for God's sake. States rights doncha know.

It does indeed look like the South has won, given that is where the current Republican extremism and modern neo-racism was born, and then spread throughout the rural areas of much of the nation.

Without the US Civil War:

No US intervention in WWI, and Germany wins. Therefore, no Hitler and no WWII. Treaty of Brest Litovsk stands, and Soviet Russia is never a great power.

There wouldn't have been a Civil War and the Prussians wouldn't even had dreamt of European dominance. The result of these PMs might just be a multicultural English speaking empire that is expanding into the one world democratic culture with single payer health care for all commonwealth citizens.
